Board names interim superintendent

Dr. David O. White was installed as Washington County Schools’ Interim Superintendent last week by a 5-0 vote of school board members.

White assumes his post June 1, replacing Linda Jewell-Carr, who resigned effective May 31 after announcing her departure in April.

White is a veteran of nearly 20 years as an educator and school administrator in Virginia schools, ending with his most recent posting as Superintendent of King William County Schools, where he was fired in December 2022 in a divisive and controversial 3-2 decision after more than six years in the position. In announcing White’s hiring, WCS Board Chairman Carlos Riddick said the county school board sought recommendations from the NC State School Board after learning of Carr’s resignation. Riddick expressed “confidence” in White’s appointment, saying, “We will not be without a leader (during a new school construction project).”

White told The Beacon the following day that his first task as superintendent will be to assess the schools’ status and “have real conversations about what works and what doesn’t work...”
