Politics plays a key role in choosing members of the elections board

Predictably, Democrat and Republican party leaders view North Carolina’s amended formula for manning county election boards (BOE) differently.

In 2024 legislation, the state’s Republican-dominated legislature passed a measure that took BOE appointment powers from the governor and put the authority in the hands of the state auditor.

Washington County Commissioner John Spruill — who is also the county’s GOP chairman — applauds the change.

“We thank the North Carolina State Board for their steadfast commitment in appointing county board members all across North Carolina, especially here in Washington County. “For years, citizens have expressed their frustrations and concern for lack of transparency and security in the elections process.

We are confident the new leadership not only at the North Carolina State Board of Elections but also with our Washington County Board of Elections, North Carolina is on the right track in re-establishing accountability, restoring public trust and ensuring North Carolina is the gold standard in election integrity across our country...”
