Tyrrell County Library young EcoExplorers once again took to the wilds of Columbia’s streets, the edge of its waterways and made a stop at is Pocosin Wildlife Refuge to hunt for mushrooms and insects as part of the mycolo- gy portion of this year’s scientific outing.
When we last left the Tyrrell County EcoExplorers they were delving into the world of ento- mology, setting out to observe and document all manner of insects to work towards their badges.
Last Tuesday’s journey includ- ed a robust lineup.
This time, the quintet was fo- cused on the interesting world of fungi, an area where guides Laura and Tyler Neitzy were invaluable sources of information. Tyler was especially helpful with the identi- fication of local fungi since that is his particular area of expertise.
Before heading out, the duo spoke to the kids gathering in the conference room about the importance of fungi in the natu- ral world and how the nature of animal and plant relationships, in general, synergize and impact the natural world everyday...
