County positioned to start re-evaluating property next year

Washington County Commissioners positioned the county for an early revaluation of real estate — ahead of the state’s once-every-eight-years requirement — following a consultation with a revaluation contractor last week.

Commissioners voted 5-0 to “move forward” with the early revaluation process after hearing from Greg Piner and Renee McGinnis of Piner Appraisal Inc. — the firm that performed the county’s last revaluation in 2021. County Manager Curtis Potter says the motion approved in a special meeting Monday, October 27, was an “informal” action. Commissioners must approve a resolution —probably in its November 3 regular meeting — to cement the early revaluation stance. There must also be a contract with a revaluation provider, such as Piner or another firm.

General Statutes mandate countywide reassessment every eight years, but permits more frequent revaluations.

Piner and McGinnis pointed out that “early” revaluations have become more frequent in the recent past because of rapid changes in real estate values.

Potter notes that Washington County aims, “To join many other counties statewide who are finding that overall market inflationary pressures justify shortening the revaluation period.”
