Col. James Rusk
Col. James Rusk, 76, “slipped the surly bonds of earth” December 28, 2025, at his home in Plymouth after a brief illness.
Jim, the son of Elton and Martha Harshman Rusk, was educated in the Fountain County, Indiana, schools, and earned his BS degree from Purdue University and his MA from Central Michigan University.
Jim’s US Air Force career spanned 28 years and included service in B-52 and B-1 bombers, the SAC-era Airborne Command Post, ROTC, and Army liaison services. His assignments took him from California to North Carolina, South Dakota to Texas, Mississippi, South Carolina, Midlothian, Virginia, and several overseas posts. Along the way he earned many honors and citations for his expertise.
Upon his Air Force retirement he located an 1850-era, Plymouth farmhouse in dire need of restoration, so he went to work bringing it into the 21st Century. He also became the neighborhood dog whisperer, adopting as many as 14 needy dogs at a time, providing food, shelter and medical care. He adopted cats, too!
Jim was a loving husband to his wife of 55 years, Emily, and a dedicated father to his sons Christopher and Brian. Grandchildren, Abby and Channer will fondly remember their grandpa. Also surviving are his sisters, Janet Harris and Joyce Jeffries; and several nieces and nephews.
He will be dearly missed. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial gifts can be made in Jim’s name to an animal care facility or charity of your choice.
Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service is honored to be serving the Rusk family.
