Washington County Commissioner Chairman John Spruill seeks the Republican Party nomination for the District 1 seat in North Carolina’s State House. He opposes incumbent Rep. Ed Goodwin who won the seat in 2019 and is pursuing another term.
Early voting for the March 3 primary election begins Thursday, February 12. Party nominees square off in the November 3 general election. According to the website Ballotpedia, the 2026 Democrat primary has been cancelled, with candidate Dorsey Harris, designated as the party’s November 3 candidate.
District 1 is composed of Washington, Tyrrell, Chowan, Currituck and Perquimans counties and parts of Dare County.
A former Chowan County Commissioner, Goodwin was elected to the NC State House in 2019, following Bob Stein’s ascension to the State Senate.
