The growing national movement against sitting president Donald J. Trump has grown widely over the years, finally making its appearance in Plymouth for the first time Saturday, March 28. Led by prominent members of the local Democratic Party Chair Wesley Stokes, the NAACP and galvanized residents alike, a gathering of some 30 participants convened at Plymouth’s New Chapel Missionary Baptist Church at noon and traveled towards the steps of the Washington County Courthouse chanting many of the familiar resistance slogans that have come to frame the national protests that were taking place at the same time. Upon reaching the courthouse, the gathering featured several speakers from the event who were primarily concerned with taking the Trump Administration to task, primarily for the president’s personal conduct but also in protest of the ongoing war with Iran, tariff policy, America’s relationship with the nation of Israel and the controversial ICE raids and deportation policies that have occupied the news cycle since Trump took office. Participants in the gathering also looked towards the future, encouraging those in the audience to turn out and participate in the coming midterm elections, flipping the balance of power in Congress in order to facilitate the Democratic Party’s return to prominence for the next presidential election.
