DOT begins prep work on NC 32 where couple died in crash

State trans- portation crews have begun preparatory work on a stretch of NC 32 where a young Washington County couple was killed in a collision with a grain truck on April 1. A North Carolina Department of Transportation crew last week patched sections on both sides of the road south of the NC 99 intersection, laying the groundwork for a 6.6-mile resurfacing project running fromtheBeaufortCounty line to NC 99.

The project was awarded to Barnhill Contracting for slightly more than $3 million. Daniel Brinn, maintenance engineer for Wash- ington, Tyrrell and Hyde counties, said preparatory patchwork and related repairs will continue in the coming weeks ahead of the full resurfacing.

The project will also include rumble strips along the centerline and both shoulders of NC 32 to alert motorists who drift from their lanes.
