Historical marker ceremony
The Town of Plymouth and the Peter H. Bell Commemoration Committee will hold a dedication ceremony and unveiling of a William G. Pomeroy Foundation Historical Marker from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 2 at the intersection of Fifth and Adams street in Plymouth in honor of Attorney Peter H. Bell Sr.
Attorney Bell, a native of Plymouth, was born around 1877. After graduating from Plymouth Normal School, he attended Shaw University’s Law School, graduating in 1901. He was admitted to the Bar that same year, thus
becoming the first Black person from Plymouth and Washington County to practice law. At that time there were fewer than 25 Black attorneys across the entire state of North Carolina.
Bell returned to Plymouth and maintained an active practice for over 60 years. He died in 1967. Two of his sons were also lawyers and a granddaughter is currently a practicing attorney.
Football registration
Washington County Recreation is hosting Tackle Football registration Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 4 through 8 p.m., for ages 6 through 12. New players are required to bring a copy of their birth certificate. Come learn the fundamentals of football.
GED/Adult Education Classes
ROPER — Beaufort County Community College will host GED and Adult Basic Education Classes from July 8 to Dec. 9 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays at 37 East Mill Pond Road, Roper. Swearing-in ceremony
D. Cole Phelps will take the oath of office as district court judge for the Second Judicial District at 3 p.m. Friday, July 31 at the Washington County Courthouse, 120 Adams St., Plymouth. A reception will immediately follow at Riverview Cafe, 108 E. Water St., Plymouth. The district serves Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell and Washington counties.
