North Carolina’s recently released School Report Cards provide at least part of an answer to the question of whether charter schools provide a better education than public schools. Because charter schools are public schools, their students take the same state assessments and are measured under the same ac countability system as traditional public schools. The results show that charter schools serving students from Washington and Tyrrell counties can outperform local school sys tems in some areas, but choosing a charter school does not auto matically guarantee stronger ac ademic performance.
