Raymond Thomas Spruill
Raymond Thomas Spruill, 99, of Roper, NC, passed away Fri day, August 21, 2026, at ECU Health Chowan Hospital.
Raymond was born January 1, 1927, in Roper, NC, to the late Wal ter Spruill and Velma Ioa Phelps Spruill.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Helen Marie Fredericks Spruill; son, Brian Thomas Spruill; brothers, Earle Spruill, Marvin Spruill, Bobby Spruill, and Walter Spruill; and sisters, Mildred Wright, Hazel Tertocha, Pat Davis, and Joyce Spruill.
Raymond dedicated more than 40 years of his life to a distinguished career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation before retiring. Outside of his career, he was a man of many interests and talents. He had a love for flow ers and gardening and was es pecially creative with his hands, making birdhouses and colorful whirligigs. An avid bird watcher, Raymond found great enjoy ment in the beauty of nature and the simple pleasures it offered.
His faith was also an important part of his life. Raymond enjoyed singing in the church choir with the Albemarle Charge of the United Methodist Church, where he shared both his faith and his love of music.
Above all, Raymond loved his family dearly. He was a true people person who never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with just about anyone. A wonderful conver sationalist with a warm and welcoming personality, Raymond had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and learning and re mained curious about the world around him throughout his life. He genuinely enjoyed learning new things and sharing what he knew with others. He also shared a special companionship with his beloved dog, Daisy, who brought him much happiness.
He is survived by his daugh ter, Lisa Gail Spruill of Roper, NC; sons, Steven Ray Spruill (Margy) of Stafford, VA, and Timothy Douglas Spruill (Knar) of Glendale, CA; brothers, Jim my Spruill (Debbie) of More head City, NC, and Phil Spruill (Marie) of Moyock, NC; grandchildren, Sako Spruill (Sabri na), Jason Ray Spruill (Carrie), Jacob Ray Spruill, and Jake Edward Spruill (Emma); and great-grandchildren, Caitlyn Grace Spruill, Aroxie Spruill, Logan Caroline Spruill, and Miller Spruill.
A private family celebration of Raymond’s life will be held at a later date.

Sue Bright Swain
Sue Bright Swain, 77, of Creswell, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2026, at ECU Health in Greenville, NC.
Born October 5, 1948, Sue was the daugh ter of the late Warren Hard en Bright and Martha Dav enport Bright Hawkins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard SWAIN Al lison Swain; son, Tony Swain; brother, J.C. Bright; and sister, Mable Davenport. Her family includes her daughters, Rose Simpson (Her bert) of Plymouth and Paula Styons of Creswell; sons, Ricky Swain (Tanya) of Fairfield, Chad Swain (Sandy) of Creswell, and John Swain (Justina); brother, Bobby Bright of Pen sacola, FL and 23 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral service was held Sunday, August 23, 2026, at 3 p.m. at Philippi Church of Christ Family Life Center in Creswell, NC. The family received friends Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m., prior to the service in the Family Life Center.
Burial will follow in the Swain Family Cemetery, 445 Ambrose Road, Creswell, NC.

Beverly Ann Simpson
Beverly Ann Simpson 71, of Roper, NC passed away August 6, 2026, at ECU Health Medical Center, Greenville, NC.
Funeral services was held 3:00PM Sat urday August 22, 2026, at Toodle’s Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Bethel Church of Christ Cemetery #2 on Holly Neck Road, Roper, NC.
Viewing was one hour prior to service.

Douglas Lee James
“Well done, thy good and faithful servant.” It is with pro found sadness to announce the passing of Douglas Lee James, 90, of Jamesville, NC.
Mr. James was a veteran of the United States Amry.
Funeral services with military rites were held at 12:00PM Fri day August 21, 2026, at Uniontown Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ). Burial followed in Uniontown Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) Cemetery.
Viewing was held from 11:00AM to 12:00PM Friday August 21, 2026, at the church.
