Council OKs Platt for streetscape design

Plymouth Town Council is again looking at a streetscape project for the downtown, to dress up the area and make it more attractive to investors and visitors.

Council voted Monday evening, November 8, to invest $28,000-$48,000 on a new “conceptual design” of improvements for an approximate 4 1⁄2-block area and for the riverfront. Allison Platt, a familiar name to downtown watchers since 1998, is tasked with completing the design.

Streetscape is not a new description for work downtownbusinesses have sought.

Council gave Sam Styons, interim town manager in 2018, permission to move forward with a streetscape plan and USDA loan to pay for it. In fact, Wooten Company has been paid some $67,000 for the plan it worked on at that time.

However, when a new administration took office in December 2018, council had difficulty reaching consensus on any part of the plan. It was shelved, and approval of the loan — which had never closed — was allowed to expire...
