Pocosin Innovative Charter wants to purchase Creswell campus

Two schools in Creswell — once considered disposable — are now objects of apparent desire by two separate groups.

In response, county officials are forging a new committee to pursue resolutions in the competition over the future of the school campus in Creswell, a competition that became more public Monday evening, July 1, during the Washington County Commissioners meeting.

At issue is whether Washington County Schools (WCS) will continue to utilize the facilities after its new consolidated school opens, or step away to clear the way for the Pocosin Innovative Charter School (PICS) to purchase the property.

For months, rumors have swirled that PICS covets what is currently the WCS’s Early College High School. Monday night, commissioners entertained a written request from PICS vice-chair, Constance Davenport, declaring the charter school’s interest in purchasing the “Creswell campus” to accommodate the K-8 school’s growth...
