Sharing power could be key to economic growth

Economic Developer Kelly Chesson doesn’t think it matters whether the chicken or the egg comes first. He plans to build a coop so Washington County is well situated to welcome either.

He made that analogy to the potential for new business after a Community Conversation held in Roper Thursday evening, August 14.

Community development — quality of life, amenities — and economic development — attracting, retaining and expanding local businesses — work hand-in-hand, he said, but are different; you need one to have the other, like the chicken and the egg.

About 50 people gathered in the former Roper Union School, giving input on the questions:

• What makes the community great?

• What’s not so great about the community? 

• What’s missing?


Answering the first question, Joy Davenport said the people make the community great, especially when they work together. She also appreciates the abundance of nature and the slower pace, where people can actually live and not just work.

Bishop Daniel Gilliam said the fact that political leaders actually help and share information is vital.

Although fairly new to the area, Craig Diggman said he has noticed a sense of hope among residents, even through their struggles. And, he said there is a distinct sense of pride; people have moved away, but many have come back...
