IMPORTANT UPDATE:
This week’s edition features an erroneous headline concerning the Baron James Pedreira Jr., case.
HE WAS NOT ARRESTED FOR SHOOTING A CHILD.
Pedreira was arrested on charges of felony possession of a firearm by a felon and a misdemeanor count of failure to store a firearm to protect minors.
We sincerely apologize for this error and any harm it may have caused to Pedreira, his family and anyone else affected by this mistake.
This correction will also appear in next week's physical edition.
An arrest was made last week in an October case in which a 6-year-old was shot in an Anne Street home.
Baron James Pedreira Jr., 32, was jailed Tuesday, November 18, on charges of felony possession of a firearm by felon and a misdemeanor count of failure to store a firearm to protect minors. A second suspect in the case — Erica Leonard — remained at large last week.
According to police, a 6-year-old boy was struck by a round fired by another youth in the house at 113 Anne Street about 11 p.m., Sunday, October 26. Reports indicate the bullet was fired from a bedroom and passed through interior walls and a door before striking the child in a separate bedroom.
The youngster has since been released from the hospital, Plymouth Police Chief Chief Louis Banks reports, but faces a lengthy and difficult recovery.
Pedreira is charged as owner of the weapon — a black Taurus 9 mm semi-automatic handgun — that was left in a location to be acquired by a minor and in a condition to discharge a round. As a convicted felon, Pedreira is not permitted to possess a firearm. He was convicted in 2023 of felony drug charges in Dare County, but released on probation.
Pedreira is in Washington County Detention Center on $15,000 secured bond.
