Virginia ‘Murl’ McQueen
Virginia “Murl” McQueen (Newton), 93, of Plymouth, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 29, 2026, surrounded by family.
Born on November 2, 1932, in Gibson, North Carolina, Murl, was the daughter of John “J” Christopher Gibson and Hattie Virginia Gibson.
From an early age, she displayed qualities of kindness, loyalty, and strength—traits that would shape a life defined by her devotion to her family, friends, church, and strong faith.
Murl moved to Plymouth with her husband, Eldred L. McQueen (“Mac”), and began working as a receptionist at a doctor’s practice, moving to Leggett’s Jewelry Store before later owning and managing Hillside Memorial Gardens. Her career left a lasting legacy of dedicated service to her community, where she led with humility and kindness and truly knew no stranger.
Beyond her career, Murl lived fully and intentionally. She loved cooking, playing cards, and volunteering with the Plymouth Church of the Nazarene, where she served as missionary president and was honored with the Distinguished Service Award.
She could often be found in the kitchen cooking with her grandchildren, playing bridge with friends, or at Bateman’s Beach watching her family enjoy the cottage on the Albemarle Sound. Murl had a special gift for listening, supporting others, and showing kindness, and her presence left people feeling deeply loved.
Above all, Murl cherished her roles as wife, mother, and - most treasured of all - “Nana.” She shared 44 years of marriage with Mac McQueen, and together they built a strong foundation while raising a large family. After Mac’s passing on May 14, 1994, Murl later married Peter Jack Newton, with whom she shared 11 years creating cherished memories with her grandchildren.
Murl is survived by her children, Ginger Outlaw (Tommy Outlaw), Eldred L McQueen Jr. (Mariann McQueen), and Christine Ginn (James A. Ginn Jr.); grandchildren Heather Vann Eastwood, Amanda Vann-Bass (T.J. Bass), Jacob England-Ginn (Britton England-Ginn) and Chelsea Castelloe (Patrick Castelloe); and great-grandchildren Bryson Eastwood, Vann Eastwood, Harper Eastwood, Lyla Castelloe and Dorothy “Reese” Castelloe.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Eldred L. McQueen and Peter Jack Newton; her parents, John “J” Christopher Gibson and Hattie Virginia Gibson; and her sisters, Edna Gibson, Emma Leigh West and Christine Gibson.
Those who knew Murl will remember her for her strong faith, unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and church as well as her excellent cooking. Her legacy will continue to live on through strong family values, her faith in Jesus, and the countless lives she touched.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, February 4, at Plymouth Church of Nazarene. Burial will follow at Hillside Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1 until 1:45 pm at the church prior to the service and at other times at the home of Jimmy and Christy Ginn, 206 Robin Drive, Plymouth.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Plymouth Church of the Nazarene, honoring Murl’s lifelong commitment to her church.
Though Murl is no longer with us in body, her spirit remains — woven into every shared memory, every lesson taught, every meal shared, and every act of love inspired by her life. We find comfort in faith and the promise of reunion.
Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth.
