Democrat candidates discuss variety of topics with residents

More than 100 people watched and listened last week as a dozen Democrats running in the March primary election shared information and opinions at a meet-and-greet at the Washington County Community Center in Roper.

Organized by the Washington County Democratic Committee, the Thursday, February 12, event drew party candidates seeking spots on the November general election ballot.

In attendance were candidates seeking seats on Washington County’s school board and board of commissioners as well as hopefuls for the sheriff’s post, superior and district court judgeships and clerk of court.

Candidates at the event were:

• Regina Parker, candidate for a District 2 Superior Court Judgeship. She is unopposed in the primary, but has a Republican opponent in November;

• Cole Phelps, a candidate for a District 2 District Court Judgeship. Phelps in unopposed in the primary, but have Republican opposition in November;

• Keith Phelps, incumbent Clerk of Courts who has no opponent in the primary of general election;

• Current sheriff Arlo Norman and opponent William Downing. The primary winner will face Republican James Patterson in November;

• Melinda Porter, a candidate for At-Large County Commissioner. Unopposed in the primary, Porter squares off against Republican Jonathan Sawyer in November.

• Julius Walker, incumbent County Commissioner in District 2. He has no opponent in the primary of general election;

• Incumbent Lois Clark and Julie Simpson, seeking Democrat nomination for the District 2 board seat. There is no Republican opposition in the fall;

• Incumbent Sherri Blount Gilliam, Greg Boston and Khandus Jackson seeking the District 1 school board nod. There is no Republican opposition in November...
