Supreme Court makes the correct call on Trump tariff regime

While it took far longer in my opinion than it probably should have considering the gravity of President Trump‘s tariff policy, The Supreme Court finally did what most of us already knew was coming, namely declaring that the president’s tariff regime is illegitimate and outside of the bounds of what the president’s consid- erable powers allow.

Specifically, the Supreme Court’s 6–3 decision against President Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs on nearly all U.S. trading partners at his whim means that legally, his tariff regime ought to come to an abrupt end.

Moreover, the court’s decision is a pretty strong rebuke that Trump’s gambit against the globe was never something he was justified in doing.

To say that President Trump did not take the news in a calm, reasonable and gracious fashion is an understatement to say the least. The president wasted little time in getting in front of the cameras and taking aim at the Justices that he believed betrayed him.

“It’s deeply disappointing and I’m ashamed of certain members of the court. Absolutely ashamed, for not having the courage to do what’s right for our country,” Trump said during a presser the following day.

“I’d like to thank and congratulate Justices Thomas, Alito and Kavanaugh for their strength and wisdom and love of our country. Which is right now very proud of those justices. When you read the dissenting opinions, there’s no way that anyone can argue against them... Foreign countries that have been ripping us off for years are ecstatic. They’re so happy, they’re dancing in the streets but they won’t be dancing for long. That, I can assure you.”

To those of you that regularly read my columns, I know I’m beating a dead horse at this point, but I really can’t overstate how awful the president’s tariff regime has been and how foolish he continues to be in fighting for it...
