PLYMOUTH — A Plymouth man and woman were killed Wednesday morning when a passenger car crossed the centerline on NC 32 and struck an oncoming tractor-trailer, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred at approximately 11:42 a.m. April 1, 2026, just south of the NC 99 intersection in Washington County.
Harry Spruill, 42, was driving a Ford passenger car northbound on NC 32 when the vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with an empty Freightliner grain truck traveling south. Spruill and a passenger, Whitney Spruill, 37, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Both were Plymouth residents.
An infant also in the vehicle was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Freightliner was not injured.
First responders included the N.C. Highway Patrol, Washington County EMS, Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Roper, Plymouth and Pungo River fire departments.
On Facebook, Plymouth VFD asked the community to keep its firefighters in its prayers due to working the wreck as well as the victims' family. They also noted that the agency has contacted the North Carolina Responder Assistance Initiative to assist the first-responders.
