ROPER — Nearly 250 years after Col. Edward Buncombe left his Washington County plantation to fight in the American Revolution, a new marker now tells part of his story on the land he once called home.

About 30 people gathered Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, near the former Buncombe Hall plantation on Cross Road, outside Roper, for the dedication of a wayside marker honoring Buncombe, an officer in the North Carolina Continental Line who was wounded and captured at the Battle of Germantown in 1777.
