Senior Center Director Renee Collier asked for, and received, the go ahead for an aggressive and ambitious overhaul of Washington County’s future “center for active aging” in action by county commissioners last week.
In a 30-minute presentation Monday, August 4, Collier outlined her vision for the center’s relocation to the former Roper middle school in tandem with a new partnership with the county’s recreation department — a move crafted with an eye to expanded programming, a refined philosophy and a décor to boost the senior center’s participants.
The plan was approved by a 4-0 vote of commissioners. The approval made the move of the senior center from its home on State Route 45 to the former Roper school official after weeks of speculation.
Collier’s strategy calls for work on the relocation to begin immediately, with the center’s small staff — that includes activity director Maria Johnson and nutrition site manager Martha Carter — to focus first on preparing the middle school site and packing materials at the current center.
To achieve this, the current center would close on four afternoons — August 6, 18, 25 and 27 —
