The pedestrian who died in a horrific hit-and-run traffic incident on US Hwy 64 in Plymouth Friday afternoon, November 7, is identified as 37-year-old Amanda Smeeton of the Chicago area of Illinois.

Plymouth Police Chief Louis Banks released the victim’s identity this week, noting that the woman has been in the area for a couple months and that he had contact her during that time frame. He confirmed that police have reports that the victim self-released herself from the hospital shortly before her death.

Police were dispatched to a report of the motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian on U.S. Highway 64 near Creekside Drive at 5:28 p.m., November 7, discovering that the eastbound vehicle that first struck Smeeton did not stop.

According to the PPD release, drivers of four subsequent vehicles that struck the victim stopped and remained on the scene, where they were interviewed by law enforcement.

However, as of November 10 police have obtained no information to assist in identifying the vehicle that did not stop.

The Plymouth Police Department is investigating the incident. Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has additional information is urged to contact the PPD at 252-793-4680.

Units of North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Plymouth Fire Department and Washington County EMS assisted at the scene.

Banks and the members of the PPD express their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Smeeton.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they grieve the loss of their loved one.”
