The former middle school in Roper is now christened the Washington County Community Center.
County commissioners approved the new name last week on the recommendation forwarded by Economic Development Director Kelly Chesson who solicited public input on the new designation.
Chesson says the new moniker was the most popular of several options offered to the community. Presently, the Roper facility is the new location of the county’s elections office, the Center for Active Aging (senior center) and the local center for Beaufort County Community College.
Commissioners also approved two board reappointment and two new appointments, naming WCC Chair Carol Phelps to complete the unexpired term of Syble Spruill on the Jury Commission, reappointing Gail Spiewak and Renee Collier to the Albermarle Commission’s Area Agency of Aging and posting Chris Respass to the county library board.
In other routine business at the monthly meeting Monday, November 3, commissioners approved actions, including:
- Approval of a resolution to proceed with a real estate revaluation for Fiscal Year 2029;
- Approval of a resolution opposing proposed limits on the landing of crabs suggested by Marine Fisheries;
- Directed the allocation of $5,000 of opioid settlement funds for the Open Armz re-entry program that assists in equipping former inmates return to society.
