Historian Scott Dawson provided an informative overview on Native American history, as well as debunking quite a few long-standing myths about what Washington County residents believed they knew about America’s early indigenous population.
Dawson‘s Thursday night visit to the Maritime Museum was not his first time bringing his considerable knowledge to Plymouth’s denizens. In fact, Dawson has made a name for himself among the county’s history buffs when he spoke on his ongoing efforts to solve the mystery of the Lost Colony, one of North Carolina’s most endearing and beloved mysteries.
For Dawson, putting to bed the mystery, and indeed the fanfare, surrounding the famous Lost Colony, has earned him equal amounts of acclaim and scorn among laymen and academics alike.
A native of the Outer Banks, Dawson established the Croatoan Archaeological Society back in 2009 to study the history of Hatteras Island, which includes the famous 1587 establishment, and the infamous disappearance of the English settlement on Roanoke Island.
Dawson subsequently partnered with the Dr. Mark Horton of England’s University of Bristol, to learn more about the mystery, separate fact from fiction, and teach others to keep an open and honest mind about the people and goings on of the past...
