Embracing Youth Inc brings paint pouring to kids

In much the same spirit as the Summer Reading Program series, Washington County Library opened its doors for a special Thursday morning community event from Mable Hall’s Embracing Youth Inc. initiative.

The mid morning showcase was centered on a unique form of artistic expression courtesy of guest presenter Beatrice Gorham.

Gorham introduced kids and their parents to the art of paint pouring, a literal free flowing painting exercise that required little of the high entry level skill investment of more traditional drawing and painting, but was equally rewarding once the paint started flowing onto the canvas.

It was a fun activity that Gorham honed during her time in the Martin County School system during the height of COVID-19. As such, it was an activity that kids could do safely on their own. while also exercising their creativity during that isolating period.

“I worked within the school system in Martin County during COVID…I was in charge of the arts, so it was my job to come up with something for the school’s arts and crafts time. What I came up with is paint pouring,” Gorham says. “It’s a little messy, but messy is fun for me and hopefully it’ll be fun for you too.”

In artsy circles, this sort of painting is also known as fluid art as its a technique where paint is poured directly onto a canvas, via cups and using makeshift stencils, rather than being applied with brush stokes and careful layering...
