Groups vie for future of former Creswell learning facilities

A decision on the future of former school facilities in Cre- swell may take more definitive direction as early as next month.

A public hearing by county commissioners last week drew presentations from two local organizations with interest in using all or parts of the two schools, and County Manager Curtis Potter told the board he has heard inquiries from other potential parties — including a developer known for significant development in Rocky Mount. Potter and Kelly Chesson, the county’s economic development director, say further action is likely in February.

Shivon Spear and Mavis Hill outlined their visions for the school sites in comment Monday, January 5. Spear is part of the grass roots Creswell community’s Brothers With Motion, a recent effort that’s staged several recent events targeting the community’s benefit. Hill is Director of the long-standing Tyrrell County Community Development Corporation.

Both speakers emphasized services designed to promote developmental growth for local residents in various modes.

Notable by its absence was representation from Pocosin Innovative Charter School — a Creswell institution that — based on social media comment — has strong interest in acquiring or utilizing the school property...
