Letter: Vacancy in chair position and need for action

Jun 10, 2026 at 07:00 am by N_BLayton

Dear Members of the Washington County Democratic Party Executive Committee,

I am writing to formally remind the organization that I have stepped down as Chair of the Washington County Democratic Party. With that resignation, it is now urgent that this position be filled as quickly as possible so that the party can remain organized, effective, and fully prepared for the work ahead.

The upcoming election is one of the most important elections of our lives. Washington County Democrats need strong leadership that can bring our people together, energize our base, and help ensure that Democrats turn out to vote in large numbers. This is not a time for delay. We need a chairman who can coalesce our county Democrats and lead us into this critical election with focus and purpose.

Our meeting will be held on June 17 at 7 p.m. at the Mt. Eprew Missionary Baptist Church Annex, 201 Newby St., Roper. It is imperative that all Executive Committee members attend. The selection of new leadership should be treated as an immediate pri ority, and your presence is necessary to move this process forward in a responsible and timely manner.

The North Carolina Democratic Party Plan of Organization provides that vacancies among county executive committee offi cers are to be filled within 30 days of the vacancy, and that if the county chair position becomes vacant, the first vice chair presides, followed by the next officers in line if needed. The vacancy must be addressed without delay.

Our county party cannot afford uncertainty or inactivity at this moment, and I urge the Executive Committee to move decisively to elect a new chair on June 17. This makes clear that the party must act promptly to fill the chair position and maintain continui ty of leadership.

Thank you for your service, your commitment to the Democratic Party, and your dedication to the people of Washington County.

Respectfully,  Wesley W Stokes Former Chair, Washington County Democratic Party

Editor’s Note: Posted to social media, this note from Wesley Stokes deserves some ink. Political party leadership — no matter what party’s jersey you wear — is important for organizing and inspiring folks to vote, particularly as we close in on the November election.
