Letter: Recognizing Gun Violence Awareness Month

As we recognize Gun Violence Awareness Month, I am remind ed that violence impacts far more than the individuals directly involved. It affects families, friends, neighbors, schools, workplaces, and entire communities.

Through my work with The Marcus Jackson Project, I have had the opportunity to connect with survivors, families, and community members whose lives have been forever changed by gun violence. Their stories serve as a reminder that healing is not a destination— it is a journey that often requires support, understanding, and connection.

Awareness is important because it helps us see beyond statistics and headlines. It allows us to recognize the human experiences behind the numbers and the lasting impact violence can have on individuals and communities.

As helping professionals, we often encounter children, families, and caregivers who are navigating grief, trauma, loss, or fear. By remaining trauma-informed and mindful in our interactions, we create opportunities for healing and understanding.

This month, I encourage each of us to consider the role we play in fostering safe spaces, supporting those who have experienced trauma, and promoting hope within the communities we serve.

Together, awareness can lead to understanding, and understand ing can lead to healing.
