A new animal control officer is in place in Washington County, preparing for the reopening of the county’s shelter, which is in line to restart operations later this spring.
Matthew Wills took his new post early in March and is answering animal-related calls on a limited emer- gency basis, while mastering the specifics of the job’s diverse demands.
The 38-year-old takes the reins of the animal control post following the departure of Seamus Andrican, who held the post for six months in 2025 after taking over for Wayne Wisner, who was animal control officer for five years.
Wills is new to the law enforcement field, but keenly interested.
Sheriff Arlo Norman said Wills’ enthusiasm was a major factor in his hiring.
“We understand the importance of the shelter and the need for it to work properly,” Norman said. “Wills displayed considerable interest in the position and showed greater enthusi- asm than any other candidates...”
